Gotta Have It or Live Without It: Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation Review!

Hey, everyone! It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten around to doing a product review and I’ve definitely got some products starting to build up around here that I’ve been meaning to get out to ya’ll! Today, I figured I’d go ahead and start off with a foundation review for ya.

Kat-Von-D-Foundation-4029

This is one of my newest additions to my foundation collection (I’m a foundation and skin product hoarder. It’s a problem.) and I’m sure at least some of you are familiar with it. I’m a little late to join this party because this foundation has been out for quite awhile, but I just got around to tryin’ it out. This is the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation and I have mine in the shade Medium 52. I ordered this foundation online, which is never a smart thing to do, so of course I completely screwed up my color selection. haha I guess the actual shade is alright, but it has waaay too many yellow/beige undertones for my skin! I have roscea and plenty of hyperpigmentation, so my skin has a more pink/red undertone to it. But, it’s not so terrible that I can’t deal with by using bronzers, powders, and blushes to even it out and I’m actually more than half way done with my bottle already!

Anyway, on to the actual review! The claim for this foundation is 24 hour wear and it’s supposed to actually be able to cover up tattoos (which I can’t attest to because I’m not tatted up yet!). It’s also a full-coverage foundation, so this is definitely geared toward us girls with oily, damaged skin. Which is pretty much my skin type exactly haha

The very first thing I noticed when applying this for the first time was exactly how full coverage it is! A little goes a looong way, guys! Trust me. But for how full coverage it is, it’s extremely buildable. I guess if you just kept putting on layer after layer after layer, it would for sure cake up, but I apply one and a half to two layers and I’ve never experienced any caking. This foundation is of a thicker consistency, so it did tend to settle into my pores, but I figured out quickly that if I just pat on a layer of Benefit’s Porefessional (Nyx’s Pore Filler is a dupe) before, it works a lot better. Kat Von D claims that her foundation is 24 hour wear which, maybe for dyer skinned ladies, but for us with oily/combo skin, don’t count on it. On my extremely, ridiculously, out of control oily skin, this foundation lasts for around 4 to 5 hours on me, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but compared to my typical hour to an hour and a half, I’ll take it! After about those 4 to 5 hours, I just blot with blotting papers and powder and I’m all good to go again for the next 4 to 5 hours! So, 24 hours? Nahh, definitely not. But it does last longer than most other foundations I’ve tried! Now let me show ya’ll a picture of it on……

The thing is, my iPhone camera isn’t the greatest thing in the world, so excuse the blurriness, but can ya’ll see just how flawless and smooth my skin is? There’s not one acne scar showing through and my extremely dark circles are completely gone. The redness all over my face (particularly around my nose and cheek area) has disappeared as well. This foundation just gives a really flawless, full coverage, beautiful finish that I just can’t get enough of. Oh, and it holds up to tons of puppy kiss too (: That’s my furbaby, Lacie!

The price range is around $35, but you get a beautiful bottle with a pump and it’s see-through so you can tell when you need to order or go get some more. It comes with a clear cap over the opening that most people throw away, but I kept it for traveling so it wouldn’t squirt out everywhere all over my stuff and that works perfectly!

So, the final verdict: Gotta Have It or Live Without It? Gotta have it! I love this stuff. It does have it’s minor down sides (price, settles into pores without primer), but they can easily be overlooked. Make sure when wearing this foundation, that you go in with a pore filler if pores are a problem for you to help everything even out to the best of it’s ability. If you have dry to combo skin, you shouldn’t have to worry about shine peeking through at all, but if you’re oily skinned, make sure you bring along a blotting sheet and some powder with ya throughout the day. All in all, I love this stuff. I’m for sure gonna be repurchasing in the future!

XOXO, Megan (:

Benefit Foundation Kit Review!

Hey, everyone! I hope ya’ll had fun and safe Labor Day weekends! I spent mine in Chicago for a Luke Bryan concert and it was awesome! Cole Swindel, Lee Brice, and Dierks Bentley were also performing that night, so it was full of country craziness. I loved it! Before we went to the concert though, we got to get in some good down town Chicago shopping and, of course, I had go stop in at every makeup and beauty store I passed. I used far too much money and bought way too many things, but hey. What’s life without shopping, right? (:

Anyway, I stopped in at a Sephora store, and I had been wanting to try Benefit’s Hello Flawless foundation for quite some time, so I went to go check that out. Over in the Benefit section, I found the cutest little foundation kit that included a sample size of the Hello Flawless foundation, plus some other goodies, for only $32 so I bought that instead just to kinda test-drive everything before going in and purchasing full size. It’s been quite some time since I’ve done a review for ya’ll, so today I’ve got a really in-depth review over the foundation kit for ya! Read on to see if it’s a match for you (:

    three piece foundation set

Here’s a picture of the complete set for ya. This set is called the Benefit Flawless Complexion Makeup Kit and I got it in the shade medium (they also had light and dark). The box furthest to the left is the actual box everything came in, the one in the middle is the kit with everything inside, and then to the right is a little instruction manual. Even though everything is pretty self explanatory. haha

far away set picture

When you flip the kit top back, this is everything that’s inside it. Up at the top, it has a little booklet on the best ways to apply and wear everything. It was pointless to me, but I think it would come in handy for a beginner or someone looking to really master their makeup skills. When I saw the actual kit part, I went a little girl crazy. The sample sizes are so teeny tiny and ADORABLE that I just can’t even. Yep, I’m speaking in fluent bitch voice right now. I literally cannot even. THEY ARE SO CUTE AND TINY. Cody didn’t understand my obsession, but I know ya’ll feel me. Everything is cuter when it’s in a mini version. Don’t even lie to me.

foundation set

The main reason I purchased this was so I could try out a sample size of the Hello Flawless foundation before committing to a $40 full size bottle. But I’m also actually extremely excited to try out the Porefessional! Pores are a huuuge problem for me, so I’m eager to see if this will work (if any of ya’ll have tried it out, definitely shoot me a comment down below and tell me your thoughts!). Besdies the Porefessional and the foundation, this little kit also comes with Benefit’s Boi-ing concealers and a setting powder, as well as a mini brush to apply it with. The instruction booklet says that you’re supposed to mix both shades of the concealers to get your perfect match, but I actually really love the look of highlighted under eye areas, so I think I’ll test out the lightest one for that for sure. And I doubt if I’ll use the brush on a daily basis, but it’ll defiantly be awesome for travel.

foundation swatch

This is a quick swatch of the foundation. Keep in mind that iPhone cameras aren’t the best things in the world so the coloring is a bit off! I think this color will go pretty well with my skin tone. It blended in beautifully and didn’t look too yellow or neutral so it will work for me. It has an odd scent to it, so I’m hoping that won’t be a problem when I go to actually apply it to my face. It blended out pretty sheer as well and, for someone like me with rosacea, sheer foundations don’t have enough coverage. I’m a little unsure about this Hello Flawless foundation right now, but we’ll see how it actually works out for me!

concealer

And last but not least, here’s what the Boi-ing concealers look like up close. I think the colors are gonna be perfect me, so I’m eager to give that a try and I absolutely love love LOVE this little pull-out container they come in! Perfect for traveling and on days when I’m needing to touch up, I can just stick this in my purse and go! The formula is really creamy and rich and seems like it will blend wonderfully. Super excited to give these a try!

All in all, I’m pretty excited to try everything out in this kit. There’s some products I’ve been wanting to try for awhile as well as some new ones and, if ya’ll know me, you KNOW I’m a sucker for cute packaging. And Benefit definitely got this one on point! When you’re finally done with everything in this kit, you can pull out the middle part and then you just have a cute, little storage box! I’m overly excited about that box. haha Of course, if ya’ll have used this kit or anything in it before, leave me a comment below and tell me all about it, whether it’s good or bad. I wanna know what I’m getting myself into! And once I’ve used everything for awhile, I’ll have an updated review for ya and a picture of what everything looks like on me personally. Keep a look out for that! As always, don’t forget to like this post and give me a follow for more beauty/makeup related posts like this one (: Thanks so much for hanging out with me for a little bit tonight and I’ll talk to ya’ll later!

Gotta Have It or Live Without It: L’Oreal True Match Foundation!

Hey, everyone! Happy Wednesday! I hope your weeks are going great so far. Cody and I are finally beginning to settle down into our new apartment, though we still have plenty of decorating to do! (If you want to see a video tour of our new apartment, click here: https://psmeganelizabeth.wordpress.com/2014/06/22/my-first-video-upload-ever-new-apartment-tour/ ) We’ve been busy, but I did manage to get in one trip to Ulta this week and I finally jumped on the bandwagon and picked up the ever-so talked about L’Oreal True Match foundation. I had purchased one not too long ago, but unfortunately I’m terrible at judging colors and it was a little too dark, but will work well after I get back from Myrtle Beach with a tan. So I needed to get a color that matched me now so I could try it out for ya’ll!

ImageOne of the things that I noticed right off the bat about this product was the bottle. I love it! I think it’s perfect for summer travels, it fits perfectly into any travel makeup bags that I have, which is a huge plus for me. I also love how the bottle itself is clean and professional looking. It doesn’t have pictures, fancy fonts, or crazy colors on it. Packaging like that can be cute, but this is just simple and to the point, which I think we can all appreciate!

Now, on to the foundation talk… I highly recommend this product for anyone who’s having a tough time finding your perfect foundation shade. This line has a broad range of colors to choose from and, since the bottle is completely see through, you’re able to most accurately select the best color for yourself (even though I’m an idiot and still picked out the wrong color haha). This foundation goes on really smoothly and has a medium coverage finish to it. For myself, I went over a few spots with extra redness twice, but the first time around, it actually did really well in covering everything up! I apply this with my foundation brushes and I recommend that you do the same because it’s just gonna be a huuuge mess and not blend out well if you use your fingers!

Let me warn you: after applying this, it’s shiny. It’s absolutely necessary that you go over with a setting powder. If you’re a one-stop-shop kinda girl, this isn’t the foundation for you because it does take some extra care to blend it out well and apply your powder over it. I did notice as well that, throughout the day, there was some extra oil coming through around my T-zone that I needed to touch up with powder. Nothing too bad, but it was a minor inconvenience. I do have extremely, extremely oily skin though, so for those of you with normal to dry skin, this would be fine for you!

Final Verdict? It depends! I’m not gonna say this is the greatest foundation of life because I defiantly have some that I enjoy better, but this was nice! The price point was great, it’s readily available, easy to travel with, great shade range, and gives awesome coverage. My skin got greasy throughout the day, but it was nothing unmanageable. I won’t be pulling this out for everyday use, but it’s definitely going to be a great foundation to have in my arsenal. If you have oily skin like me, just be sure to bring your powder with you for touch ups! I do recommend this as a good drugstore foundation because it does just what it claims: it’s true matches to your skin! It held up well and I really don’t have too much to complain about. I wanted to try it for awhile and I’m glad I did! If you’ve tried this yourself, leave your thoughts down below so I can read ’em! If you have any questions, ask away (: Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to ya’ll later!

Product Update: Witch Hazel

Hey, everyone! I hope you’ve had an awesome weekend and are enjoying your Sundays so far! This is actually my second post of the day, but I’ve been meaning to get this product update post up for awhile and I had some extra time today to do it! My first post though is my first video upload ever and it’s a tour of my new apartment, it’s only about 6 minutes, so you’ll defiantly wanna go check that out!

Image

This is sucha horrible picture, I apologize, but I needed to take my own picture instead of just pulling one off of Google, you’ll see why here in a second! Since this is a product update, I won’t be getting too much into the actual description of Witch Hazel, so click on the this link right here: https://psmeganelizabeth.wordpress.com/2014/05/12/gotta-have-it-or-live-without-it-dickensons-witch-hazel/ and that will take you directly to my first post where you can read all about my initial thoughts.

Anyway, on to the actual product update now! I raved all about Witch Hazel in my first post and, even though I was pretty positive this product couldn’t get any better, it did. I’m crazy about it. This is my absolute holy grail product! As I mentioned in my first post, I still use this as a toner (since it is so watery, I combine it with just a dab of my moisturizer for a thicker consistency) and that’s the way that I would recommend you use it as well. It seems like every single day I notice some other way that Witch Hazel has changed my skin for the better. For one, I haven’t had a single breakout on my face since I’ve started using it. NOT A SINGLE ONE. This is a big one for me because I used to suffer horribly from cystic acne and hormonal breakouts and to finally have all that under control is like a breath of fresh air! Along with preventing breakouts, here’s what else Witch Hazel has done for me:

~minimized pores (yes, really!)

~evened out skin tone

~smoothed out skin

~got rid of some acne scars

~made skin more glowy

~moisturized skin

I know ya’ll are probably like, “There’s no way,” but I swear to you, all of the above is 100% true. For the acne scar one, I did say that it helped get rid of some acne scars because the scars that affect deeper layers of skin likely won’t be touched by anything other than cosmetic lasers or minor surgeries, but Witch Hazel defiantly lightens newer, smaller ones! And, the reason I had to take my own picture instead of getting one off Google is because I wanted to show ya’ll just how much of the Witch Hazel I’ve used. I’ve had this for a few months, I use it twice every single day, and I’ve only used a liiiiitle bit of it so far! Whaaat?! This is gonna last me so long, which is awesome because I never want it to go away! haha

Basically, my skin has gone through a dramatic change for the better all because of this product. For me to continuously recommend and rave about a product means that it has to be pretty damn good to not get replaced. Witch Hazel is now a staple in my beauty routine, I can’t live without it! I think ya’ll need it in your life too (:

As always, if you have any questions, just ask down below! I’ll get right back to ya. And don’t forget to check out my earlier video post showin’ ya’ll around my new apartment! Thanks so much for reading and I’ll talk to you later!

Gotta Have It or Live Without It: Nyx Matte Lipstick

Hi, everyone! I’ve got a Gotta Have It or Live Without makeup review for ya tonight! It’s over the Nyx Matte Lipstick line (:

Image

When summer finally rolls around, that’s when bright, colorful makeup comes into play! I especially love experimenting with bold lip colors during the warmer months. But between the summer heat and humidity, drinking and eating, talking and laughing, swimming and sweating… it’s almost impossible to find a lip color that last through all of that. I had pretty much given up all hope on finding a lipstick that lasts and settled on just wearing basic lip balm all summer. Don’t get me wrong, lip balm is fantastic and I still do wear it everyday when I’m doing a lot less makeup. But for parties, nights out, and special events, I still need myself a great lip color that won’t fade, smear, or smudge! That’s where this Nyx Matte Lipstick line comes in (:

I had just recently used this lipstick line for the first time only about two weeks ago. I wore this gorgeous deep red color to my cousin’s wedding. I applied it before I left and tucked it away in my clutch ready to constantly reapply like I’d done with every other lipstick in the history of ever. But through pictures, eating dinner, chowing down on dessert, drinking, talking, and laughing, it never faded. That’s absolutely incredible, so let me say that again in case you didn’t quite catch that… THIS LIPSTICK NEVER FADED. Like, never. It never faded. Through out the whoooole night, it still looked as perfect as when I first put it on! Can we all just take a second and fan-girl together? I only reapplied ONCE the whole entire day. ONCE. JUST ONCE! And that time wasn’t really even that bad, I just wanted a little bit more color intensity for pictures. Other than that, I was free to forget about my lips for the rest of the night because I had no doubt it wouldn’t fail me! It was pretty magical. haha

Nyx Matte Lipsticks come in a cute, little black tube like you see above with a clear part so you can tell your colors apart. The thing I love most about this lipstick is that gorgeous matte finish it has. I love shine just like the next girl and the fun thing about this line is that, with the matte finish, you can build your lip gloss on top if you so please. But I didn’t use any gloss at the wedding and still got tons of compliments.

Final verdict? GOTTA HAVE IT! This isn’t even a “ehhh. it’s alright.” This is a 100%, head over heels in love, I completely, totally, and wholeheartedly NEED this product in my life! I have no idea how I survived without this being in my beauty routine before. haha Nyx Matte Lipsticks are available wherever Nyx products are sold and I picked mine up at Ulta for less than $5! I’ve only used it a few times, so maybe it’s too soon to claim this, but I’m pretty positive I’ve found my holy grail lipstick. Please, trust me on this, you NEED this in your life! Promise!

Gotta Have It or Live Without It: Dickenson’s Witch Hazel

Hey, everyone! I hope ya’ll had a fantastic weekend! I had sucha crazy one. My brother graduated from Illinois State University this weekend and then, of course, it was Mother’s Day on Sunday, so I’ve been celebrating all weekend! I actually haven’t even been on here in 3 or 4 days because I’ve been so busy. But I’m back and at it today with a Gotta Have It or Live Without It makeup review comin’ at cha!

Confession: I’m a face makeup/product hoarder. Foundations, concealers, face washes, exfoliating scrubs… you name it, I love it! And I’m willing to try anything at least once! Hey, all in the name of beauty, right? haha So, naturally, the product that I have for you today is Witch Hazel. The brand that I purchased (actually, the only brand I’ve ever seen) is Dickenson’s Witch Hazel. You can get it at any drugstore in the first aid isle and it comes in a biiiig see-through bottle. The product actually just looks like water, it’s just a clear liquid type thing. Because it is a water-type consistency, it’s impossible to use it as a spot treatment or anything like that. This is something you’ll have to rub in. The most popular use for Witch Hazel is as a toner, which is what I’ve been using it as. During the trial period that I’ve been tryin’ this product out, it’s replaced what I was using before, which was my Tea Tree Oil (see the full review on that in my April Favorites post, here: https://psmeganelizabeth.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/april-favorites/ ).

Image

Now, before I go on, we need to have a serious chat about something. If death had a scent, it would be Witch Hazel. I don’t know what it is with me and smelly products (Tea Tree Oil smells quite disgusting as well!), but I’ve pretty much grown used to them by now. The good thing about the smell? It’s not near as strong as the Tea Tree Oil is! Thank goodness.

Now on to the fun stuff! Besides the stench, this stuff is actually pretty rad. It’s super easy to use and gives amazing results. To use it as a toner, you can either pour some on a cotton pad and wipe it over your face or you can mix your moisturizer with it and rub it on your face that way. I’ve been applying it with my moisturizer. During the 2 weeks I’ve been using this product, I’ve actually noticed quite a difference in my skin! It cleared up any breakouts I had within a few days, soothed any soreness (this would be perfect for sunburns), and, dare I say it, I even believe that it’s minimized my pores! Maybe I’m just being wishful on that last point, but I’m pretty certain my pores have shrank. Another thing I love about Witch Hazel is that is so gentle. Some toners have the tendency to dry out skin and cause peeling, but I use this morning and night and my skin is always so fresh. I’ve never had a problem with harshness when using this! Keep in mind that I do have oily skin though, so if your skin is on the dry side, use with caution at first and then apply accordingly.

Final Verdict: GOTTA HAVE IT! I think Witch Hazel will work wonders for every skin type and I fully recommend it to everyone. Not to mention the prince is amazing at just $3! Don’t expect instant, overnight results with this, but you will start to see improvements within just a few days. It’s so gentle and leaves your skin with a fresh, glowing, clean feeling. Nothing is better than a clean feeling (:

If you’ve tried this before, be sure to comment down below and let me know what you think! As always, comment with any questions and be sure to give me a follow for more makeup and beauty related posts like this! Thanks for hanging out with me this morning and I’ll talk ya later!

Gotta Have It or Live Without It: Real Technique Brushes!

ImageMorning, Everyone! Today I’ve got a Gotta Have it or Live Without It review for ya’ll! If you checked out my shopping haul that I posted yesterday, you know that I bought a few new goodies to add to my makeup chaos. Among those, I had purchased a Real Techniques foundation makeup brush. I have others at home as well, so I figured I had enough and have used them enough to give ya’ll an honest, put together review on them. So, here we go!

I know for a fact that Real Technique brushes are readily available at Ulta, because that’s the only place I’ve ever purchased them. But I do also believe they can be found at Target and maybe Walmart and a few select other stores. I’ve never actively looked around for them in any drugstores by my house, so I can’t be sure, but if you’re wanting to check some out, Ulta has them for sure!

Everyone who even has the slightest interest in makeup and beauty knows about Sigma and Mac brushes. And anyone who has a job in the beauty industry likely has a set (or two… or three….) of their own! Sigma and Mac brushes and literally the Holy Grail of makeup brushes, it just doesn’t get any better than that! I, personally, only have one Mac brush set (their eye brushes are the best!), but I swear by my Sigma brush sets. My Sigma brushes are my babies. Confession: I’m oddly attached them. It’s kinda strange. So, when I heard awhile back about Real Technique brushes, I was so excited to try them! I’d heard from several people that they’re a pretty close dupe to more high-end brushes. And not having to shell out $30 a brush sounded pretty fantastic to me! So, I hustled my butt to Ulta and picked up a few!

First off, I have to tell you guys, the price couldn’t get any better. It just can’t. You can find most of the Real Technique brushes for under $10 a brush! Let’s just bounce back to Sigma and Mac brushes and let me remind you real quick: most are over $30 a brush. You do the math! So, without a doubt, the price is my favorite thing about these brushes! You can’t beat it. Another thing that I’m pretty crazy about is how professional these brushes look. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for cute prints and I defiantly have got myself some chevron and animal print brushes layin’ around, but when I go to work on clients, it’s a necessity that my brushes look professional. These brushes achieve that look for me. They’re pretty basic, but not boring, and they’re easy to identify in a line-up. Another thing that I really enjoy is the feel of the brushes (is that weird?). Anyone who uses makeup brushes knows that having soft, but dense bristles are imperative. You need the softness so they don’t scratch and irritate your face, causing redness, but you need the denseness so the brushes can pick up product and evenly distribute and blend it over your face, as opposed to it just sinking in and absorbing into the bristles. So, looks-wise and feel-wise, Real Technique brushes get a pretty high score!

They’re really aren’t that many downsides, but the one I noticed was pretty major to me. Right away, within in my first few days of using these brushes, I saw that there was a lot of product build up on the brushes I used for liquid products. That leads to makeup not blending out right and, of course, build up leads to breakouts! Biiiiiiig problem for me. This can obviously be easily fixed by giving these brushes a good, thorough washing every day to every other day, but I don’t have that kind of time and I’m guessing most of you don’t either! So, while this might be a minor setback for some of you, it wasn’t a good thing for me.

Final Verdict? It really depends. The jury’s out on this one! When it comes to Real Technique brushes, I don’t think you’ll ever find another drugstore brand that gets the job done like these brushes do! They really are quite nice. Would I ever chose Real Technique brush over my Sigma and Mac brushes? Nope, probably never. But on days when I’m working on location, doing a lot of makeup for a lot of different people, I will always, always, always bring my Real Technique brushes with me! In that situation, the more brushes, the merrier! Not bad, not great, but would I repurchase? Yep! If money is an issue or you just simply need more brushes like I did, I think these are the perfect brushes for you!

XOXO, Megan (:
