Problem Skin to Flawless Skin!

Hi, Everyone! So, I’m taking the leap of faith today and showing ya’ll my biggest insecurity ever: my natural skin. So be nice! For those of you who don’t know (or can’t tell by the lovely picture haha), I’ve struggled with skin issues my whoooole life. I got my first zit in 2nd grade (I remember it like it was just yesterday) and it all went downhill from there. I’ve struggled with cystic acne, breakouts, oily skin, dark under eye circles, very uneven skin tone, and eczema. I know, lucky me, right? Nowadays, I’ve finally got it under control. But not before it had already done everlasting damage on my face. After fighting the War of Zits, I was left with scars, and plenty of them! Fun Fact: the picture you see was taken this morning and face is actually completely clear. Those marks you see? Scars. That I’ve had for years. The only way I’ll ever fully get rid of them is by color-correcting lasers or other pricey treatments. Maybe in the future I’ll get something professionally done about it. But right now, I’m perfectly okay with using makeup for it!

If ya’ll read my blog post, My Beauty Story, that I did just a few days ago, you know the real reason behind why I became a freelance makeup artist. But another major reason I became a freelancer is because I was inspired by my horrid skin. I wanted girls to know that it’s more than entirely possible to cover up any flaws you’re not comfortable with. I have so many amazing clients now and I know that they trust me fully because of the struggles I went through with my skin and the state my skin is still in today. They know they’re in good hands because I get it! I’ve been there. I understand. So, today, I’m gonna do a little post about how to get nearly flawless skin (hey, no one’s completely flawless, right?). With no better example than me and my glorious skin (you’re welcome, society. I’ll take one for the team), let’s get started!

ImageYou always have to start with a clean canvas, so wash your face! It doesn’t matter what face wash you use, there’s so many out there to choose from and I change mine almost daily. Then I recommend always using a primer. Primers are putting an extra barrier between your skin and any makeup products you use, which is gonna cut back on breakouts. Primers also work to smooth everything out, fill in fine lines and pores, and keep your makeup in place all day. I use the Bare Minerals Oil Control primer and I also love Benefit’s Porefessional!

ImageOnce your primer dries, then you’re ready for your foundation. Now, if you’re dealing with very problematic skin like mine, you need something very full coverage. I can’t use BB creams because it doesn’t look like I’m even wearing anything! I prefer using liquid foundations because I just find liquids are easier to work with. Always apply liquids with a damp beauty blender or foundation brush. When you do that, you’ll get an extremely natural, beautiful, and flawless finish. Use whatever foundation you feel comfortable with, but my pick lately has been Revlon Colorstay Whipped foundation, though my foundation choices change constantly!

After that, you need yourself some good concealer! My all-time favorite concealers are those made by Mac. Their Pro-Longwear line is to die for. Love them! They give amazing coverage and stay on all day. These concealers cover even my darkest acne scars or deepest under eye circles. They’re 100% worth the price. I always recommend applying concealer with a brush just like you did your foundation, but some people feel more comfortable just using their fingers. If you do use your fingers though, make sure to wash your hands well to avoid spreading bacteria and causing more breakouts. Whatever works best for you is what you should do!

Image

When you’re done applying your liquids, it’s an absolute must that you set everything! I don’t care if you have dry skin or what, you need to set your makeup with something, otherwise, throughout the day, it’s gonna start slippin’ and slidin’ all up on your face. No one wants that! I have oily skin, so I have about a million different powders that I use to set everything with. Whatever you use though, apply it with a brush, concentrating on the areas you get oily in (your t-zone) and places you applied your concealer. For me, I just apply it everywhere and I do that on most of my clients as well. I also finish off my everyday makeup look with a setting spray, just for extra security.

This is what my finished product looks like! Now, obviously I go in and contour, use blush, and do my eyes, but I just wanted to show ya’ll the general idea of how to achieve near-flawless skin. It’s really not difficult either! Anyone can do it. It’s just a matter of finding products that you love and that work for you. Trial and error, girl. That’s all it is. So, if you have problem skin like mine, don’t be intimated. Makeup has got your back!

I hope you weren’t too frightened by my makeup-less skin! It should come with a warning label, shouldn’t it? haha Thank ya’ll so much for spending time with me today and  be sure to check back later tonight for my Outfit of the Day post! Talk to you later!

XOXO, Megan (:

Just Some Chit Chat (:

Hi, Everyone! This is just gonna be a really quick post tonight, just catching you guys up on a few things goin’ on with me (:

If ya’ll remember about a week ago, I mentioned in a blog post that my cousin had just started up an online boutique, K2 Avenue. Well, she finally got her website up and running and got her first shipment of clothes in! And, seriously, they’re adorable. I’ve already bought 5 things and she gets new shipments in really often… I’m in trouble. haha If you girls love aztec prints, chevron, bright colors, and cute accessories, you’ll find something you love! Promise! Until April 5th, she’s offering FREE shipping and 10% off, so get your pretty butts over there, check it out, and buy yourself somethin’ cute! You deserve it (:

Photo: We are happy to announce our first promotion! Please share this post, and as soon as we get to 500 likes we will have a giveaway! Get over to our site quick before your size is gone! We've posted new items! Stay tuned for information on a possible upcoming open house also!

Speaking of cute things…. I was on Pinterest (shut it, I know I have a problem. haha), and I stumbled upon this reeeeally cute idea for homemade shoes! Uhmm, yes please! You just pick up a pair of canvas shoes at Walmart, fabric paint, studs, and fabric glue, which seems simple enough. I wish I could show the picture to ya’ll, but when I tried to copy and paste it, something weird happened, so there goes that idea! Anyway, of course, I’ll share the results with you guys! Even if it turns out to be the most horrid thing this world has ever seen.

Another thing I wanted to talk a little bit about was something one of my clients actually told me about. She’s in her early 30s and has struggled with acne since high school. Her breakouts aren’t severe at all, but she consistently has one or two bumps on her gorgeous face and everyone knows one zit is all takes for a mental breakdown sometimes. She was at Walgreens one day and found some tea tree oil, so she bought it just to give it a shot and she loved it! She said it cleared up her problem areas overnight. Anyone involved in the beauty industry has heard of tea tree oil before, but I personally had never tried it myself. Though I’ve wanted to! I’m gonna go out and pick some up tomorrow and give it a go. I just have one minor breakout on my chin right now that’s not really a problem at all, but I love me some new skincare products, so obviously, I’m gonna try it. haha If any of ya’ll have tried this yourself, let me know whatcha think! And, as always, I will have a review up about it as soon as I can (:

I’ve got some new reviews coming up and I wanna talk to you guys about some skincare lines as well, so stay tuned for that. That’s it for now, told ya it was gonna be short and sweet tonight! Thanks for hangin’ out with me for a little bit!

XOXO, Megan (:

Unconventional Acne Treatments

Hey, Everyone! (:

Today, I wanna talk about some unconventional acne treatments. As someone who has dealt with acne my whoooole life, I have tried EVERYTHING. I used to suffer from cystic acne, which is the worst kind of breakouts because they go deep under your skin, are nearly impossible to treat, and stay on your face for weeks to months at a time. Oh, and did I mention you can’t cover them up with makeup? You can slap on as much makeup as you want and you can use color correcting formulas and concealer and everything, but that will just change the color… not take away the bump itself. I’ve tried a ton of acne-fighting products, from prescription to drugstore and everything in between. Once none of those work, you get desperate and take to the internet to research those crazy home remedies. That’s what I’m gonna talk about today!

I just want to let you guys know before you read on that I have been using basic “house” products like this for upwards of 8 to 9 years, so you can bet that I completely understand how these products work with my skin. And before I recommend ANY of these products to any of my clients, I make sure that they have gone to a dermatologist and have tried many, many products. These are used as a last resort thing, not products to be used on the daily. And the results depend on your skin type as well… my gorgeous girls with oily skin will be able to use much more potent products more frequently than my dry skin beauties. So, keeping all of those things in mind, let’s start talkin’!

Unconventional Acne Product #1: Colgate Toothpaste. Now, I don’t know about any other toothpaste (except Crest, which DOESN’T work!), but I know Colgate works for sure. You just need to be sure you get the all white, normal toothpaste… NOT gel toothpaste with stripes of mint or something else in it. Just basic toothpaste. What you do is slap this on your pesky zit after you’ve washed your face at night and (you can even put a band-aid over it to keep it from getting every where) go to bed! When you get up in the morning, wash it off, and your zit (while it may not be completely gone) will be seriously reduced in redness and in size!

Unconventional Acne Product #2: Vick’s Vapor Rub.I know what you’re thinking, but stick with me! Vick’s is that stuff in the blue jar with the teal/blue lid. You apply this exactly how you applied your Colgate toothpaste, with a band-aid if you don’t want it to get everywhere overnight. The thing I love about this unconventional product is how much is soothes those sore zits. It’s crazy! The second this product touches your breakout, it will be instantly soothed. And, another bright side? It will dramatically reduce the size of your breakout, or make it completely disappear, overnight. I, personally, have never once experienced any drying while using this and neither have any of my clients or friends that I recommended it to.

Unconventional Acne Product #3: Hydro-cortisone Gel. Since this product is already made for skin, I recommend this very, very often to people. Anyone who has struggled with acne knows what a cortisone shot is. You go to the dermatologist to get an injection directly into your zit and it will start to reduce within 24 hours. This is a fraction of the cost of the injection and it’s a topical solution instead! A lot less scary if you ask me! This gel is kind of a lesser-known product, but you can pick it up anywhere. It comes in a smaller toothpaste-like tube and you can get it in the first aid isle because it’s used for cuts, eczema, burns, rashes, and other skin infections (like acne!). Instead of just leaving this sit on top of your skin like the first two products, I want you to rub this in. It will alleviate any soreness almost instantly and, while it may take three or so days to make your zit go away completely, everyday you will notice a difference!

Unconventional Acne Product #4: Hot Compress. This is so basic and simple that this is something everyone should know about! All you do is take a rice pack or an electrical heating pad, hold it on your breakout for 10 to 15 minutes, and it will either soften the skin and drain your breakout or shrink it in size! You might have to do this a couple of time to see results, but it will work! Promise! Also, be sure to do this on a day when you can stay in as this is more than likely going to make your skin a little red (though it should never hurt or turn tomato red, that means it’s too hot or you’ve used it for too long!).

Before using any of these products, always wash your face and, after using them, always apply your moisturizer! There are a ton of other home remedies out there, some I’ve tried, some I haven’t, but I wanted to share these with you because I know they work and I trust them enough to recommend them to my clients, friends, and family as a last resort action. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to comment below! Keep in mind, I am just a makeup artists, so, while I am knowledgeable on all skincare products, always see your dermatologist for severe, constant breakouts! But I’m always here to help and give my advice and encouragement (:
